From a close-up of an iris flower from 1926 by Georgia O'Keeffe, this is a deeply seductive and profoundly intelligent reimagining of a regal classic for men. Just as with the original Interlude Man, a majestic initial burst of powerful frankincense reveals a wonderfully harmonious inner life as it develops; but whereas the original Interlude carried the flowing, spice-laden warmth of a blazing desert sun, Black Iris is a dispatch from a dark midnight sky, where the stars illuminate a variety of rare delights. The intensely aromatic thyme and rosemary of the original are toned down here, leaving the opening relatively cool, glossy, and humid, which in turn unlocks the narcotic softness of buttery iris and violet leaf. The smoky, rich oud wood and incense still hold their regal splendor, but the drydown leans more toward creamy, heady sandalwood and cedar. If Interlude Man is a stunning crown of polished jewels, Interlude Black Iris is an incredibly soft velvet robe—and what king doesn't need both?
