Creating the fragrance was a journey in itself. Consider the process described by perfumer Christian Allori: “The starting point and centerpiece of the fragrance is amber. I worked on the amber accord, using some natural amber as a target reference while working at the IFF office in Paris. I took the accord out of my library and was ready/eager to use it a lot!” “During brainstorming, we vividly envisioned a rustic woodland. This ship was built to withstand hardship. The harshest conditions the weather and ocean could offer. We used cedarwood, patchouli, vetiver, cypress, and oakmoss.” “We were careful to dose the nuances of salty seawater. Here we probably went through the most reworks and adjustments, in order to reach the right balance with the other elements. Black pepper to give a cool, fresh, and airy feel, blended well with the saltwater notes.” Even here, the fragrance told the story of a dark and rugged life at sea. We decided to add some light and warmth to the image, counteracting it with softness using osmanthus and violets. We finished off the legendary white whale chase with a touch of fermented absinthe.
