Vanilla has a fascinating story... Revered by the Totonac, an American Indian people, as a sign of unquenchable love, the conquistadors who brought it back to Europe found it to resemble a "sword scabbard," which, of course, has nothing to do with the many virtues attributed to it. If its scent is more reminiscent of beige and pastry cream than 17th-century fun, it's because the vanilla we know in scents and perfumes is actually vanillin, its main scent compound. For vanilla, we chose Bourbon vanilla, with its woody and smoky notes more faithful to the scent of the "sword scabbard."
